Royal Family’s six-word response when anyone mentions Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have had a turbulent relationship with the Royal Family since they quit as working royals and moved to the US – and they are rarely mentioned in regal circles.
Members of the Royal Family have a sharp six-word response to anyone who mentions Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, it has been claimed.
According to Gyles Brandreth, a former Tory MP and podcaster ,the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s names “do not crop up very often” in Royal circles these days. However, when they do, courtiers swiftly try to steer the conversation away from them.
This comes after Harry and Meghan decided to step back from their roles as working royals and relocated to Montecito, California, USA, in 2020. Their relationship with Harry’s family has been fraught since then, with the couple making numerous allegations about them in interviews with Oprah Winfrey, their Netflix series, and in Harry’s memoir, Spare.
In the book Voyage Around the Queen, author Craig Brown recalls Lord Snowdon once saying “the Royal Family is quite good at blanking out anything unpleasant or uncomfortable”. This, Brown says, is something they have “had to employ with increasing frequency” since Harry and Meghan’s move.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle “do not crop up very often” in royal circles, an expert says.
Brandreth, in 2022, stated: “These days, the names of Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, do not crop up very often in court circles. When they do, courtiers flinch almost imperceptibly and change the subject or, if that’s not possible, refer to them obliquely as ‘persons who live overseas’. Mention the Sussexes to other members of the Royal family… and they simply smile briefly and say, “We wish them all the best” and nothing else.”
Since their departure from the UK for the United States, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have seldom returned to England. They made an appearance at Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in 2022, with Harry making additional solo trips, including a visit to his father, King Charles, following his cancer diagnosis.
Prince Harry says he and William “barely spoke a word” at the Queen’s funeral.
In his book Spare, Harry revealed the depth of his estrangement from his family, alleging that he “barely exchanged a word” with his brother at the funeral. Experts suggest it’s believed the brothers haven’t spoken since.
Royal expert Roya Nikkhah commented on The Royals with Roya and Kate: “The family dynamics and relationships here with his father, his brother William, have been shattered, I think it’s fair to say.”
Harry even claimed that the rift led to a physical altercation with his brother, alleging that William “grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and … knocked me to the floor”, breaking a dog bowl in the process.
