The burning question about Prince William and Princess Kate’s official job titles was finally answered and disclosed on Prince Louis’ birth certificate after he was born on April 23, 2018.
Just like any other parent, the Prince and Princess of Wales had to fill in the urgent paperwork required after the birth of their youngest son, who celebrates his sixth birthday today.
Louis was born at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London, at 11.01am and weighed a healthy 8lb 7oz.
In the days following his safe arrival, Prince William signed the paperwork at Kensington Palace and confirmed the newborn’s full name and surname – His Royal Highness Prince Louis Arthur Charles of Cambridge, as stated on his certificate at the time.
In a surprising revelation for some, William and Kate’s occupations were also recorded on the paperwork. The surprising job title entry states they are ‘Prince’ and ‘Princess of the United Kingdom’.

Parents in the UK legally have 42 days to officially register a child’s birth, although William and Kate registered their son’s arrival just eight days after he was born. The happy parents registered their firstborn, Prince George’s birth 11 days after he was born and for Princess Charlotte, her birth was registered just three days after she arrived, as stated in the Mirror.
Unlike most parents waiting in line at registration offices, a registrar travelled to Kensington Palace where William signed the document from the comfort of his home.
When the Prince of Wales’s own birth certificate was signed in 1982, there was no box for Princess Diana’s occupation and this is because the mother’s occupation was not introduced to birth certificates until 1984.
Shortly after Prince Louis was born, Kensington Palace released a statement with the big name reveal: “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son Louis Arthur Charles. The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge.”

Louis’s first name is said to pay homage to Prince Philip’s uncle Lord Louis Mountbatten, who was known to be King Charles’s mentor, who died in an IRA bombing in 1979. Louis is also named after his grandfather the King, while the name Arthur is a regal name going back centuries and was the name of King Henry VIII’s first son who died as a teenager.
The late Queen Elizabeth had to overturn a historic rule implemented by King George V in order to make sure he had a royal title.
Back in 1917 George V decided that only children of the sovereign would become a Prince or Princess upon birth, as well as any grandchildren born through the male line.
However, when Prince William and Princess Kate had their family, the late Queen made sure they would all receive their HRH titles by changing the 100-year-old rule.
