Kate Middleton’s adorable midnight tradition for Prince George that happens once a year
Tomorrow marks a very special day for Prince George as he will be celebrating his 11th birthday – and in the past the Princess of Wales has revealed how she makes sure her children’s birthdays are as special as possible
It seems like it was just yesterday that the Prince and Princess of Wales presented Prince George to the world on the steps of the hospital.
But tomorrow the second-in-line to the throne will be celebrating his 11th birthday as he nudges nearer to becoming a teenager.
The youngster and his siblings Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have all had to see their mum Kate go through cancer treatment this year – so it’s likely she will want to make George’s day as special as possible.
And in the past, Kate has revealed one sweet tradition she carries out every year the night before one of her children’s special days – and it requires her to stay up late.

That’s because once her little ones have gone to bed, Kate sets about making them their very own birthday cake. And George’s 11th birthday tomorrow means she could have a late night in the kitchen as she whips up the birthday treat. Kate revealed her adorable tradition in 2019 when she and William appeared on a special BBC programme with baking expert Mary Berry called A Berry Royal Christmas.
In it, she spoke of her love for baking and told Mary that when it comes to her children’s birthdays: “I love making the cake.” She added: “It’s become a bit of a tradition that I stay up ’til midnight with ridiculous amounts of cake mix and icing and I make far too much. But I love it.”
George’s birthday comes a week after he joined his dad William to support England in their Euro 2024 final against Spain, his latest outing in a spree of recent public appearances. He joined William at the Olympic stadium in Berlin, Germany, as Gareth Southgate’s side failed to end a 58-year wait for a major men’s trophy.
George with younger sister Charlotte It was not the first time the prince cheered England on at a Euros final, as he could be seen ecstatically celebrating the Three Lions’ early goal in the Euro 2020 final alongside William and his mother, Kate. George, the eldest of the couple’s three children and second in line to the throne, has been making more outings in recent months.
At the end of June, George met Taylor Swift at her concert at Wembley Stadium. The prince and his sister, Charlotte, nine, joined William in smiling for a backstage selfie with the US singer to celebrate their father’s 42nd birthday. Swift’s boyfriend, American footballer Travis Kelce, said the royal children were “an absolute delight”.
Only a week earlier, the young prince joined other members of the royal family on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to celebrate the King’s official birthday. George smiled and waved to thousands of well-wishers as Kate made her first public appearance since announcing her cancer diagnosis earlier this year. The prince had earlier joined his mother, sister and six-year-old brother Louis in a carriage as they travelled down The Mall for the traditional Trooping the Colour ceremony.
In May, George and his father presented the FA cup to winners Man United at Wembley. Both royals shook hands with both teams as they collected their runners-up and winners’ medals respectively.
