Meghan Markle’s strict everyday diet revealed – and her very surprising craving
While Meghan Markle is well known for living a healthy, balanced lifestyle, the Duchess has revealed her one not-so-healthy craving that may surprise you
The Duchess of Sussex has become known for her holistic approach to life – raising her children, Archie Harrison and Lilibet Diana with Prince Harry and their rescue chickens on a sprawling $14.5million mansion in the heart of Montecito, Southern California.
While her pre-Harry lifestyle blog, Tig, often referenced her dedication to health and wellbeing pre-closure in 2017, her recent lifestyle brand launch, American Riviera Orchard, has only served to cement this further.
However, while the offerings from her new brand so far only include (very) limited-edition jams, when it comes to her diet, it seems balance (with an occasional treat) is key.
In Finding Freedom, Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand wrote that Markle started every morning with a cup of hot water and a slice of lemon. “This is followed by her favourite breakfast of steel-cut oats (usually made with almond or soy milk) with bananas and agave syrup for sweetness,” the couple wrote.
Meghan said that when it comes to eating, balance is key
The Duchess is a big fan of Yoga to supplement her healthy eating
The Duchess also confessed to Shape magazine that she tries to eat as clean as possible, as much as possible: “I just try to avoid the things that I know are going to make me feel lethargic or sluggish,” she said. “I eat mostly fish and veggies – but I am also a foodie.” She also spoke to Best Health magazine about her decision to cut back on eating meat so she could relax at the weekend: ”I try to eat vegan during the week and then have a little bit more flexibility with what I dig into on the weekends.” Meghan is also a fan of green juice, replacing an afternoon caffeine fix with a healthier energy boost.
Speaking to Today she said: “It’s easy to fall into the trap of rushing for a coffee when you hit that 4pm slump. But if I blend some apple, kale, spinach, lemon, and ginger in my Vitamix in the morning and bring it to work, I always find that sipping on that is a much better boost than a cup of espresso.”
Alcohol isn’t off limits either. In fact, her former blog The Tig was named after Tignanello – an Italian blended red wine. In 2012, Meghan told Today: “At the end of a long day there is nothing I enjoy more than a glass of wine. I used to be of the ‘it doesn’t matter, so long as it’s red’ persuasion, but then I grew up, and so did my palate.” She has long championed that balance is key: “Because I work out the way I do, I don’t ever want to feel deprived. I feel that the second you do that is when you start to binge on things. It’s not a diet; it’s lifestyle eating,” she’s quoted as saying.
While Meghan’s healthy go-to snack is peanut butter and apples (as revealed in Finding Freedom), perhaps one of her more surprising cravings is french fries, with the Duchess telling Best Health Canada in 2016 they were ‘one of her favourite foods’. She has also confessed to sometimes craving mac and cheese, telling EyeSwoon: “I now buy the Annie’s organic one if I’m craving it, but I throw some frozen peas into it and have this gooey, simple, childlike meal.”
Sunday dinner is also one of Meghan’s favourite meals, according to Today: “I am a big fan of Sunday suppers. Whether we’re eating lamb tagine, pot roast or a hearty soup, the idea of gathering for a hearty meal with friends and family on a Sunday makes me feel comforted,” she said.
