Meghan Markle’s ‘surprise’ at Kate and William’s lavish home ‘sparked tension’
Meghan Markle’s “surprise” at Princess Kate and Prince William’s lavish home “sparked tension” between the two couples, a royal commentator has claimed.
When Prince Harry began dating US actress Meghan, the couple moved into Nottingham Cottage, a small two-bedroom property on the grounds of Kensington Palace.
The Duke of Sussex revealed he was embarrassed to show the Duchess of Sussex his home in his memoir, Spare.
The father-of-two wrote: “I was excited to welcome Meg to my home, but also embarrassed. Nott Cott was no palace.
“Nott Cott was palace adjacent – that was the best you could say for it.”
In contrast, the Prince and Princess of Wales lived in Apartment 1A, a spacious 20-room house in the main building of Kensington Palace.
Later in Spare, the Duke of Sussex recalled being invited to have tea with Prince William and Princess Kate.
Harry noted he was “embarrassed” by how small Nottingham Cottage was compared to the future King and Queen’s “museum-like” space.
Robert Jobson, a royal commentator, detailed Harry and Meghan’s feelings on their home in his new biography, Catherine, Princess of Wales.
He quoted a close source as stating: “I am not saying Meghan was jealous, but she was surprised how lavishly Harry’s brother was living compared to where they were living.
“It was perhaps the beginning of all the tensions between the couples.”
Jobson wrote: “Meghan understood, of course, that William was in the direct line of succession, but she felt that Harry, as a royal prince, deserved more than he had.”

The couple later moved to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor – a 10-bedroom property – in time for the birth of Prince Archie in 2019.
In January 2020, the duke and duchess stepped back from their roles as senior royals.
By the summer of that year, Harry and Meghan settled in Montecito, California with their son, now aged five.
In June 2021, the Duchess of Sussex gave birth to Princess Lilibet in Santa Barbara.

Prince William Trimmed the Royal Staff With This Surprising Cut
Story by Staff Author
• 3d • 2 min read
The Duchy of Cornwall is down one decorator.
Prince William has reportedly made up his mind and wants to trim down the monarchy, but a new report shows that his methods also involve cutting staff from the Duchy of Cornwall, the royal family’s 700-year-old estate. According to this year’s Integrated Annual Report, the royal family decided not to re-hire Queen Camilla’s sister, Annabel Elliot, who worked as an interior designer on the Duchy of Cornwall payroll. While she previously was working on the royal family’s vacation homes, she was no longer employed by the royals from 2023 through 2024. William, who holds the titles Duke of Cornwall and Prince of Wales, was put in charge of the Duchy of Cornwall in 2019, when King Charles III granted him the title and its responsibilities.
“Sources confirmed that Prince William would no longer employ Ms. Elliot, although it was no reflection on her work,” The Telegraph reported yesterday. Sources told the publication that the queen’s sister’s assignment was considered complete and the rest of the staff had learned sufficiently from her to keep things going.
People reports that Elliot started working for the family back in 2005 and then-Prince Charles hired her as “chief designer of his estates.” The publication notes that she was paid “several hundred thousand dollars over the years.” Her work included furnishing and decorating estates in Cornwall, Wales, and the Isles of Scilly.
“During the period to 8th September 2022 the Duchy paid Mrs. Annabel Elliot, the 24th Duke of Cornwall’s sister-in-law, in the normal course of business and on an arm’s length basis £19,625 [$25,276.51] for fees and commission and £12,316 [$15,862.70] for the purchase of furniture, furnishings, and retail stock for the Duchy of Cornwall Holiday accommodation, Duchy offices and Duchy Nursery,” the report reads, which is the same information that was shared last year. “At 31st March 2024, there was £nil (2023: £nil) [nothing] remaining payable to Mrs. Elliot in respect of these.”
Earlier this year, Elliot accompanied the queen to Wimbledon. When Camilla was crowned at Westminster Abbey in May 2023, her sister served as her coronation attendant.
