Tom Walker reveals the kind gesture Kate Middleton made to thank him for their duet
The BRIT Award winner says he was honoured to perform with the ‘warm-hearted’ Princess of Wales
Tom Walker said he was impressed by Kate Middleton’s music prowess when they played together – and touched by the kind gesture she made to thank him for their duet.
The BRIT Award winner, 32, says the Princess of Wales sent him a personal letter after they performed together on a special BBC Christmas performance in 2021. And he said it is definitely “one to show the grandkids” in future.
Speaking on the Mirror’s Invite Only podcast, Tom said: “Kate was absolutely amazing at piano and totally nailed the song just like a great musician. She was genuinely good. There was a top secret rehearsal, where I think somebody came in and swept the building.
“It was just me and her in this rehearsal room, practicing. I was so nervous, you know, I don’t really get nervous for rehearsals. I was like, this is mad. I failed half my GCSEs at school. There’s no way my parents ever thought, for one moment, that I would ever be doing anything like that.
“In the rehearsal I was quite quiet, you know. I didn’t really know what was proper or improper to say to royalty, as I’ve not spent too much time with them. But we did have like little chats and stuff and she was a very, very lovely, normal.
“What stood out was the grace and the elegance that she had going on. You never know if these things are just because people are on telly. But in real life she was just a really kind, warm hearted, nice person. We talked about touring, what I’d been up to… things like that.”

Tom went on to say that his shocked family didn’t believe it was real when he appeared on the telly with Kate. He laughed: “And then we watched it on the telly on Boxing Day with my family. My gran was there, she couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t tell anyone (in advance), it was like top secret, but I told them that day and I think they thought I was joking, you know?
“My dad, he was most surprised out of anyone. He was like ‘How did that come about?’. I said ‘Dad, I’ll be asking myself that for the rest of my life.’ Somewhere in my studio I have a letter from her, thanking me for playing with her. It’s surreal. Something to show the grandkids one day, I guess.”
