Expert lifts lid on why Princess Kate rarely ever steps out in these three colours
Princess Kate always dresses to complement her natural beauty but occasionally she steps out in daring “standout shades”, a fashion stylist explains.
From sports events to official state banquets, Kate, the Princess of Wales is never anything less than flawless and is a fashion inspiration to many adoring fans.
Whether dressing in contemporary outfits opting for jeans and jackets or choosing elegant ballgowns for red carpet premieres, Princess Kate is always impeccably dressed – however, the royal tends to favour certain colours when dressing for royal occasions.
Fashion stylist and image consultant, Francesca Cairns, told Express.co.uk about Kate’s colour choices: “She tends to avoid certain colours not because they’re ‘wrong’ but because she knows what really brings out her natural beauty.
It’s all about dressing to complement her features, and that’s something we can all learn from her.”
The celebrity stylist, who gets daily messages from celebrities worldwide for outfit advice, explains every individual fits into four main seasonal categories: spring, summer, autumn and winter with each having three subcategories.
Ms Cairns said: “I know people really struggle to put Kate into a season because she does look amazing all the time. However, she is a summer.”
Although typically in shades of blue, pink and berry, Princess Kate occasionally dresses in “standout shades” of orange, bright purple and dark brown.
The fashion stylist, speaking to Express.co.uk, explained Kate falls in the “summer season” category: “I know people really struggle to put Kate into a season because she does look amazing all the time. However, she is a summer. Kate looks better with colours that have a blue undertone rather than a yellow undertone. Anything from her true summer palette really makes her features glow.” Back in 2022, Kate chose to wear a stunning chic white blazer and trouser suit while meeting the Jamaican Prime Minister. She paired the white Alexander McQueen suit with a Ridley orange blouse.
Analysing the bright orange choice, Ms Cairns said orange is a colour to be careful with because it can “clash” with Kate’s natural colouring. At the time, royal fans were delighted with the then-Duchess of Cambridge’s outfit and took to social media to express their love for her style. Princess Kate wore peach when pregnant with Prince George
Not as bright, but opting for a slightly more subtle shade, Princess Kate once dressed in a daring coral-coloured Tara Jarmon coat for an event at Naomi House Children’s Hospice, in Hampshire in 2013, to mark Children’s Hospice Week. The collarless piece was single-breasted with bound buttonholes, darts at the waist and shoulder, angled front pockets and had a deep back vent. Kate spent time touring the facilities, including the gardens, children’s bedrooms and therapy pool. At the time, Princess Kate was roughly six-months pregnant with Prince George.
Wearing bright purple is a “striking choice” for the Princess of Wales, claims style expert, Ms Cairns. If they are “too intense” the shades could detract from Kate’s natural features. She explained: “While purple can be a striking choice, particularly for cooler undertones, the intensity and undertones of the colour are crucial. Bright purples, leaning towards warmer tones or with too much intensity, risk overpowering Kate’s features, detracting from her natural elegance.” In November 2023, Kate wore a striking co-ord suit by Emilia Wickstead with black high heels and oozed confidence from the minute she arrived at the Shaping Us National Symposium at The Design Museum in London.
Princess Kate in burgundy for first anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s death
Adhering to the seasonal palette, the stylist of over ten years says she “absolutely loves” Princess Kate in colours such as “berry and burgundy”, which are not as bright in colour. During a memorial service to mark the first anniversary of the late monarch’s death, Princess Kate sported a burgundy hat by Sahar Millinery to match her elegant coat from London-based designer Eponine for the church service at St Davids Cathedral in Pembrokeshire in September 2023. The label belongs to designer Sahar Freemantle, who was a scholar with the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust. The charity supports the training of talented and aspiring craftspeople. Kate also sported the late Queen’s diamond and pearl drop earrings for the service.
Princess Kate rarely wears dark brown
Princess Kate rarely steps out in dark brown and Ms Cairns believes the knee-length coat Kate wore to an engagement in Cornwall in February 2023 was “too dark and warm” for Kate, adding “taupe brown” is often best for the Princess. Kate’s coat was from the British brand Hobbs London and was the Women’s Brown Unlimited Celeste Flared Coat. It was believed to be a newer version of the Hobbs’ 2011 Celeste Coat in Chestnut Brown that she also owns and is made from a chestnut brown wool fabric.

Princess Kate bundles up in a deep brown coat
Princess Kate chose to wear another deep brown, long coat, by Alexander McQueen during her trip overseas as she braved the near-freezing temperatures during a visit to Boston Harbour in December, 2022. She fought off the chill with a matching scarf and a pair of gloves. The couple were visiting the coastal city of Boston to attend the second annual Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony. Underneath her coat, it seemed Kate was wearing a long, orange dress with a high neck, which brightened up her ensemble.
