The King has always been close with his “beloved” daughter-in-law, but following the announcement of the princess’s cancer diagnosis, a source said that Charles is willing to do “anything he can do” to support her.
The gaps in the Royal family line-up have been apparent over recent months, but now Buckingham Palace has issued a road map for the King’s return to public duties.
Kate – whose absence sparked wide-spread speculation earlier this year – has spent time at home with her family after sharing a video last month revealing her cancer diagnosis.
The King and Queen will make a joint visit to a cancer treatment centre next Tuesday, where they will meet medical specialists and patients.
In June, they will host the Emperor and Empress of Japan for a state visit at the government’s request.
Charles maintained a close relationship with Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako and has visited the nation five times as the Prince of Wales.

The palace has said she will return to official duties when she is cleared by doctors.
Her spokesman said she “may be keen to attend events as and when she feels able to,” but “any initial public events will not necessarily signal a return to a regular public schedule”.
