Kate, the Princess of Wales appeared to follow in the footsteps of her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana with her “powerful” change to her wedding vows.

Princess Kate, who was 29 at the time of marrying Prince William in April 2011, made the decision to switch up the traditional royal vows to take out the word “obey”.

As reported by Woman and Home, Princess Diana – who was known as a trailblazer member of the Royal Family – was the first royal bride to tweak the classic vows.

Instead of mentioning the word “obey”, both Kate and the late Diana promised to “love, comfort, honour and keep”.

The decision to remove ‘obey’ was reported prior to their wedding day, and was noted as a major switch-up for the Royal Family.

Reported before their big day, Kate and William decided themselves what they want to say in their vows.

At her wedding to the then-Prince Charles in 1981, the late Princess Diana ditched the royal protocol of saying ‘obey’.

Unlike Diana and Kate, the Duchess of York and the Duchess of Edinburgh both said ‘obey’ in their wedding vows.

Speaking prior to Kate and William’s wedding, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams praised the couple.

He told the Mirror: “Ive been very struck by the way in which William and Catherine have approached this great event. They’ve thought through what they want for themselves, but also what they want to say.

“They have a very simple, very direct picture of what really matters about this event. The couple are believed to have ditched tradition and the word ‘obey’ because after knowing each other for a decade – first at university – they treat each other very much as equals.”

On Monday, April 29, Kate and William will celebrate their 13th wedding anniversary.

The couple are set to celebrate the day privately – and will likely not mark the day publicly.

Kate and William now have three children – Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Prince Louis, six – and live in Windsor.
