Princess Kate follows late Queen’s golden fashion rule as she prepares for future role
The Princess of Wales has become known for her bold fashion choices, and it seems there is a reason behind the colour palettes she opts for when out in public, and it’s all down to the late Queen Elizabeth
The Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, is a global fashion icon whose influence on the style world has been so significant it’s been coined ‘The Kate Effect’, with her wardrobe choices often causing a shopping frenzy as items sell out within moments.
Kate’s fashion sense never fails to captivate onlookers, whether she’s dazzling in a Jenny Packham gown at a star-studded movie premiere or presenting an award in London, proving she’s mastered the art of public presentation.
Even during a fleeting visit to the Men’s Final at Wimbledon amidst her ongoing cancer treatment, Kate made headlines with her striking outfit, drawing comparisons to the late Queen Elizabeth II’s penchant for vibrant hues. Throughout her impressive reign, Queen Elizabeth II was known for her love of bold, statement-making colours, a choice that had a very practical purpose.

Royal author Robert Hardman, in his 2011 book ‘Our Queen’, highlighted the Queen’s “engagingly modest” nature and revealed her witty take on wardrobe choices: “My favourite remark she ever said was, ‘I can’t ever wear beige because nobody will know who I am.'”
In a recent chat with the publication, celebrity stylist and fashion expert, Leroy Dawkins, shed light on whether The Princess of Wales ‘ shift towards a more daring wardrobe has been influenced by Queen Elizabeth II. He noted that many Royal observers have picked up on the fact that the Princess of Wales often opts for monochromatic outfits, and there could be several reasons behind this choice, reports OK!.
The Princess is well-known for colour co-ordinating her outifts
The trend of tone-on-tone dressing, also known as easy dressing, might be particularly appealing to the princess given her recent health issues and the demands of being a mother to three young children. Even with the help of a stylist, sticking to one colour – like the purple dress she recently sported at the Wimbledon final – is a simple and hassle-free way to dress that still looks put together and stands out.
Leroy suggested that the princess might be revamping her wardrobe in preparation for her future role as Queen, taking style cues from the late Queen Elizabeth II who also preferred single-colour ensembles due to her busy schedule as a working mother and monarch.
While the princess often gravitates towards colours like blue and prioritises coordinating her three young children at public events, Leroy emphasised that there is a deeper meaning behind all of her sartorial choices.

“Colours chosen can also let you know of the wearers mood as colours represent certain messages. The princess wears red, navy, white, camel and light blue. The tone-on-tone trend of dressing is also a favourite of the Duchess of Sussex,” explained Leroy.
“Red is associated with love. Camel is associated with energy, cheerfulness, activity, fire and warmth. The Princess’s favourite blue is regal and also symbolises serenity, stability, inspiration, or wisdom.”
“She is a working mother who is slowly transitioning and finding her way in fashion for the next chapter of her life.”
